Where is formaldehyde found?
Formaldehyde is a chemical used in the production of adhesives, bonding agents and solvents. As a result, it is commonly found in a variety of building products such as:

  • Pressed-wood products (plywood, particle board, paneling)
  • Foam insulation
  • Wallpaper and paints
  • Some synthetic fabrics (example: permanent press)
  • Some cosmetics and personal products Formaldehyde is also a byproduct of combustion. When burning natural gas, kerosene, gasoline, wood, or tobacco, formaldehyde is produced. Automobile exhaust is a common source of formaldehyde in our environment. Tobacco smoking in the home is another source of the chemical in the indoor environment.

Best Use, Color Match & Countertop Movement ...Priority & Cost .
Best Use, Color Match & Countertop Movement ...Priority & Cost ()

After picking your countertop color, backsplash option and going over seam placement, you may be ask to prioritize a couple of other parameters before fabrication proceeds.

Best Use is focused on full utilization of the slab. Decreasing waste is best for our environment and best for keeping cost down.

Color Match is most likely achieved when the complete countertop is cut from the same slab. Cutting from the same lot is considered to be the next best situation. Color match with very white quartz is challenging, lighting intensity, angle of light and type of light are all compounding factors. Variation with the same slab is possible

Movement refers to the flow of the pattern. Some color patterns show no movement.

In an ideal world, Best Use, Perfect Color Match and Flowing Movement Design co-exist on every custom countertop job. This is not always the reality. In some cases, the job will fit on one slab for best use & color match, However, due to Stone movement, one would like to go into a second slab to get better flow. This would create several concerns, 1. It leads to more waste 2. Increased cost 3. It increases the chance of color mismatch, especially with white quartz.

    What Options Do I Have?

We always focus on best use, over movement, unless the customer budgets for special alternative options. Digital layout is required to see the countertop movement prior to fabrication. The cost of going into another slab can then be considered and weighed against the potential color mismatch. Revisiting seam placement may be advise in some situations.

A couple of points that may help you prioritize:
    - Does the best use layout movement flow adversely effect the countertop beauty if standing in the kitchen.
    - Flow across the seam may have a higher priority then flow of an island compared to an L countertop.
    - How pronounced the countertop movement is may be a factor to weigh against additional cost.

Blemishes & Imperfections ... or Characterist Beauty? .
Blemishes & Imperfections ... or Characterist Beauty? ()

Every day stone fabricators create & install great looking countertops. Island size, countertop length, type of stone, color of stone, stone movement, miters, edges, curves, corners, kitchen access and other factors are key factors of complexity. Proceeding forward with a project brings with it a high level of potential issues and failure risk. One often choose to proceed in hopes of great beauty. Having realistic exceptions, is very important. Please keep the following points in mind as you develop your expectations. Our success and your happiness with the results, are directly connected to your expectations.

    SIZE & SEAMS
Extra large countertops & islands are very hard to fabricate, transport, polish and at every step, the chances of countertop breakage, scratching or severe injuring to staff is very prevalent. After the fabrication, the task becomes even more challenging as the countertops must be moved to trucks & carefully secured for transport, and then into the home for instillation without the aid of hosts which aid in movement during fabrication. Hands on manpower lifting becomes the the only option. Great care needs to be taken to avoid staff injury & damage within the home. Seams great increase safety in fabrication and movement into your home.

    TYPE & COLOR
The stone type must be always considered when judging the complexity of a project. Mother Nature is the most magnificent stone designer, she follows no rules and has an extreme sense of explorative creativity. This unpredictability, is what gives nature it's awe! This characteristic is also what makes countertop fabrication an art form. Every fabrication shop most use an array of artistic creative techniques during the fabrication process. Stains, agers, enhancer, waxes, adhesives, fillers, grinders, diamond brushes, and polishers are just a few of the tools & tricks fabricators work with. In fact, stone slab processes are also required to be creative when taking an exotic and rare 50 ton plus stone blocks, with imperfections and turning them into slices of stone weighing about 1,000 lbs each, which are then bundled to travel 6,000 plus nautical miles, followed by tough truck road miles to the fabricator. The slabs are moved a minimal of 20 times each before cutting on state of the art combo water jet & saw processors. It is hard to think of all the effort that is put into the mining, processing, transportation of stone countertop materials.

Each stone type has is own characteristics and liabilities. For example, Quartzite is the hardest to process, but yet is often viewed as the most exquisite of creative options. Quartzite is also one of the highest cost stones to work with. It's hardness, creative characteristics, rarity and highest cost, give Quartzite unique challenges.

    SCRATCHES, BLEMISHES, IMPERFECTIONS
Natural Stone, Manufactured in most likely the most extreme conditions of heat and pressure, Could and may have imperfections. Then each stone is handled 20-40 times before it enters your home. It is amazing that an the stone industry has developed such effective procedures, and at the same time with the highest emphasis on safety with extremely heavy and fragile stone. Great effort is taken to avoid scratches, however how close one focuses on finding them is a factor. Examining a polished surface under special lighting at specific angles could show scratches others do not see. At every point during handling, the potential for scratches exists. Removing scratches seems like a solution but can lead to other concerns.

    DESIGN
Design options are fun to work with but also can add great complexity with high potential for failure. Even with recommendations to avoid them, one may choose except the risk and to proceed. Build up miters, complex edges, shapes & textures can be very challenging, especially when combined with other fabricator risks.

All fabricators aim for 100% success and customer excitement. Great effort is focused on this by sales staff, project manages, shop personal, support staff & Installers. In some situations of concern, a go back can resolve the concern. At times the fabricator, knowing all of the factors and potential failures involved and although perfection was not 100% achieved, still views the project as great success and a great work of art. In contrast, the home owner is focused on small area they view as a blemish or imperfection. As we all know, this is a very frustrating situation for all involved.

We learn though life that attention to detail is important and perfection is desirable, we also learn to look at the big picture to see the full beauty around us. Mother natures materials with impressive character (which can also be viewed as imperfections & blemishes) is the canvas fabricators work with. Although we aim for perfection and 100% success, this is the canvas we choose to work with as a hand crafted medium, and is picked by the you to show the exquisite natural beauty of the countertops in your home. We hope, you see and feel in your heart what we see in your countertops.

One day I asked myself as I was admiring the stairs at a Victorian Estate, were the caved floral designs on the side of each stair step tread, hand carved or carved with some type water powered equipment? As I stepped closer, I could clearly see significant variations in the carvings, most likely due to skill level, wood density differences, cutting location and angle, as force had been applied to the cutting tool. The same stencil may have been used for the outline, but the execution showed clear differences in outcome. I stepped back and my eyes followed the stair carvings up the three stories of steps and then to the many carved pendents and several connecting posts with intricate vertical designs, rosettes and other complex carvings. One does wonder, did the original owner focus on inherent imperfections or did they step back and see the magnificent functional art, mother nature and man created? And could they have considered it would be appreciated with such admiration 150 years later, even with the added aging marks of time?

    Contract For Work . Black
    Contract For Work ()
    Black

This contract for work is made as of ___________ by and between Granite Works, LLC. and ____________________________________, (herein after referred to as customer) who desires Granite Works, LLC to provide services to customer and customer desires to obtain such services from Granite Works, LLC.

    SELECTIONS:
Before receiving an estimate, it is recommended that the customer narrow down options based on cabinet, tile and/or other items that may affect the final decision. Before we can start the scheduling process, all details must be confirmed, including but not limited to product, color, edge style(s), sink option(s) and backsplash option(s) and payments must be paid in full based on the final selected details. Actual slabs will be tagged and approved for the project prior to scheduling.

    ESTIMATES:
Our estimate is based on the drawing provided by either the customer or the contractor. Prices are subject to change to our measurements and templates. The price received includes one trip for templating and one trip for installation. Additional trips can be completed at an additional charge of $150 for each additional trip, scheduled on a day that that best meets our schedule demands.

    SCHEDULING TEMPLATE:
All details must be confirmed prior to scheduling a template. Customer must be on site at time of template to confirm all information in writing. All items purchased outside of Granite Works, LLC, including but not limited to sinks, free standing range, slide in range, down draft and/or cook tops must be on site at time of template. Apron front/farm sinks must be installed prior to our template visit, unless the sink manufacture suggests otherwise. All cabinets receiving countertops must be permanently installed, set, level and properly secured to the wall and/or floor and no adjustments are to be made after the completion of a template. Granite Works, LLC will not level or adjust cabinets. Granite Works, LLC. HIGHLY recommends that NO ADJUSTMENTS be made after the completion of a template. If cabinets are adjusted after the completion of a template, a secondary template must be completed at an additional charge of $150. Granite Works, LLC.’s success rate is highest if we are able to template on bare cabinetry (no existing countertops). If your project is an existing kitchen or remodel and your existing countertops cannot be removed before your scheduled template, the countertops must be cleared off and no fixtures, dishes, décor, etc. are to be left of the existing countertop. By choosing to template over an existing countertop, you are acknowledging that you understand the possibility for unnecessary gapping and acknowledge that Granite Works, LLC. cannot be held responsible for said possible gapping. Tear out and disposal services are available at an extra service charge. Should the customer choose to hire Granite Works, LLC. to complete a tear out service, Granite Works, LLC. cannot be held responsible for any patchwork that may be required after the tear out of your old countertop, including but not limited to wallpaper, tile, spackle, trim, mirrors, etc. Granite Works, LLC cannot accept any responsibility for the integrity of the cabinets or any knee walls after removal of the old countertops. Should Granite Works, LLC determine that there is an issue with your cabinets, the determination, if possible, will be made at the time of template and Granite Works, LLC. reserves the right to re-schedule your template and/or installation until proper adjustments have been made.

    FABRICATION:
Fabrication will not begin until all information has been confirmed in writing with the customer, including but not limited to layout confirmation, sink information, any and all cut out information, edge profiles, etc. There is a 24 hour grace period between template and fabrication that allows for any changes in the confirmed details without having to reschedule your installation date. Signed template dimensions will be placed on your slab by our fabrication team who will determine the best placement. Some granite has variations and movement. An appointment to view slabs prior to template date is highly recommended. Granite Works, LLC. suggests that the customer select their individual slabs, and complete a layout on any directional stones (stones with movement). All layouts are required to be completed the next business day after template. This gives the customer the opportunity to choose the quadrant of the stone and to discuss seam placement with our fabrication team. This layout process can also be completed via email. If the home owner chooses to waive the right to a layout, the home owner therefore accepts the direction and color of the stone as well as the seam placement, as is. All seams are completed within stone industry standards. A copy of these standards are available in the Homeowner's Guide to Countertop Installation which can be found at marble-institute.com.

    Installation:
Installation dates are scheduled 3-7 business days after the completion of your template, depending on selections, inventory and availability of material(s). The customer must be on site at time of installation and available to complete the Certification of Completion. Cabinets must be ready to accept the countertop installation. All plumbing must be disconnected prior to the delivery of the countertops. All faucets and other accessories requiring a hole to be drilled into the countertop must be on site at time of installation. Our installation crew will attach an under mount sink and/or test fit your drop in sink and/or cook top stove. Granite Works, LLC does not install drop in sinks. This is the responsibility of individual that is reconnecting your plumbing. Granite Works, LLC. does not install your cook top stove. This is the responsibility of the customer or their contractor. Granite Works, LLC is not responsible for moving any major appliance(s). If appliance(s) cannot be moved before the installation date, a seam can be/will be added for installation purposes OR you have the option to sign the waiver on our Certificate of Completion agreeing that Granite Works, LLC cannot be held responsible for any damages caused by moving any appliances.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
All payments for materials and services must be paid in full prior to scheduling. Should pricing increase after the completion of a template, the balance must be paid in full within 24 hours and before fabrication begins. Should the new balance not be paid within the 24 hour grace period, Granite Works, LLC reserves the right to reschedule your installation date. Should there be a decrease in cost after the completion of a template, a refund will be mailed to you within 7 days after the completion of the installation. Granite Works, LLC does not offer electrical work. We ask that you DO NOT schedule any other trades such as plumbing, electrical work, floor preparation, etc on the same day as Granite Works, LLC is scheduled to be in your home. Should there be other trades scheduled at the same time as our services, we reserve the right to reschedule your installation. Granite Works, LLC does not mount or recommend mounting a dishwasher to the countertops. If a dishwasher is not mounted to the cabinetry we recommend using a dishwasher mounting bracket, which can be supplied at an additional and minimal charge. If the countertops are not correct, we need to be notified immediately (within 72 hours). We will not be responsible for any work that is done after the countertops are installed, including but not limited to tile, plumbing, painting, wallpaper, etc.

Countertop ...Block Charge - What & Why .
Countertop ...Block Charge - What & Why ()

There is a fee associated with having no seam. That fee is calculated based on the sf amount of the block charged material.

Why & What is a countertop block charge?
Imagine, you have a L shape in your kitchen which is very common. You may be presented with two options.
    1. Place a seam at the corner, making the L-shape into two rectangles. 2. Go with No Seam, the L-shape is cut in one piece and installed as one piece.

Option 1 results in less waste, more environmentally friendly, structurally just as strong and safer for installation crew and surroundings.

Option 2 results in no seam, more waste, less environmentally friendly, structurally just as strong, less safe for installation crew and surroundings, greater chance of breakage during installation. In this case, other charges will apply which include:
    - Over size piece charge
    - Help carry charge
    - Block charge

The block charge adjusts the price to account for the extra waste (see photo example).

With that said, some clients still feel avoiding the seam is more important. Only you can decide which option is best for you.

    Countertop ...Material Selection .
    Countertop ...Material Selection ()

Color is very important, however not the only consideration.

    For Example

Some granites require more seams because they are fragile – and may require a seam at the sink especially if you want a large sink.

Products with veins may require extra material – and therefore extra cost, to match at the seam

Some quartz products are designed not to match at seams. The fabricator cannot make them match.

Very white quartz are more likely to show slight shade differences

Soapstone will show more marks and scratches – however they are easily dealt with but it requires maintenance.

Most marbles stain easier, use & maintain sealers if you do choose a marble.

Some colors mark more readily in use than other colors

Some granites are smooth and shiny, others with more exotic charactics, contain natural pitts and fissures and possibly even some areas of factory repair. Look & decide carefully to avoid disappointment.

Not all granites are equally suitable for outside use – some contain resins that may discolor over time in the sun.

Some products can be easily damaged by heat

Solid surface products can be made seamless for hygiene – most stone tops will require seams.

Countertop ...Seams Necessity, Expectation & Reality .
Countertop ...Seams Necessity, Expectation & Reality ()

What is your threshold for variation?

Most often, A SEAM IS REQUIRED! Countertop size, stone type, slab size, sink location, dishwasher location, configuration, job site access and worker safety are all factors that effect seams and placement. Slabs are produced in various sizes between colors, limiting the distance of a run or island without a seam. Countertop pieces are very heavy and require increasingly better access as size increases. Shape and stability of the countertop piece are also major factors for handling during fabrication & installation. All of these factors are considered at time of programming for best success. Finial cost may need to be adjusted after seam placement it determined.

House Movement & Seams: It is common for a house move slightly over time due to weight & foundation changes or from season to season with humidify and temperature changes. Stone countertops are very rigid with little or no flexibility. However, seams are designed to give in this situation. A seam repair is much less cost then a broken countertop replacement resulting from movement stress. Brick patios, sidewalks and other construction practices also use seams as a method of stress relief.

    SEAM VISIBILITY

Seams are visible. This is true with Mother Nature made and Man Made Quartz & Solid Surface materials. Acrylic Solid Surface countertop material does lend itself to very tight seams making them much harder to visualize. As a side note, Acrylic Solid Surface countertops are more fixable allowing them to handle house movement better.

What type of person are you, do you step back for the over all view? Or do you step up and see any flaw that may be present, especially at the seam location?

It is very important to talk your seam expectations before pursuing the project. Talking about the level of demands expected is very important to understand before a commitment is made to move forward.

    Digital Layout .
    Digital Layout ()

Our standard procedure requires that our fabrication team make the best use of your chosen material. If you have a specific request, the digital layout allows you, the customer, the ability to review and approve the target layout prior to fabrication. A digital layout is not a guarantee of final out-coming, but it does great help set the target.

While this option does put you closer to programming to help pick and choose what parts of the stone you would like to see used; our fabricators must still make best use of stone.

    IMPORTANT NOTES:
*If issues occur during fabrication, changes in the cut & layout will need to be made without notice. Fabrication often works off hours and weekends to meet install dates.

*If you insist to cut from a section of stone that would cause increased material waste and if approved, the extra material use will be added to the square footage material cost.

The Digital Layout option often adds to the turnaround times, allowing for layouts & correspondences.

Digital Layout - TWO OPTIONS PROPOSAL .
Digital Layout - TWO OPTIONS PROPOSAL ()

A digital layout helps one visualize the overall flow of the countertops movement & design elements prior to cutting.

Digital Layout with Optimal Material Use
Optimal material use is very important to pricing, fabrication, economic viability and our environment. Optimal material use is carried out by the programmer. It involves laying out the material cuts to decrease material waste, while still achieving an industry guided layout. This material use is our standard goal. In most cases, our project programmer will have two layout options with optimal material use. If you include this add-on cost, the Project Manager will email you the two layout options for your pick. A fairly quick decision is required in order to achieve the scheduled install dates.

Digital Layout with Flexible Material Use
This is a special digital layout option requiring added for the project manager, warehouse staff, programmer and INCREASE material use. This special digital layout option is 4x the cost PLUS the project cost will be RECALCULATED BASED ON MATERIAL USE. Using part of a slab or partial equates to full use. The added charges need to be paid prior to cutting. Any delay in cutting may delay the installation schedule. This special digital layout option allows one to better guide the countertop layout by using tape to outline desired cut areas, or by using slab photos. Although, this will increase the project cost, it is strongly recommended for any individual focused on directly guiding the areas on the stone to be used, in order to achieve the desired artistic countertop design. It is also recommended, if an individual desires the use of a specific slab area and/or is avoiding specific slab areas based desired look. If this special option is not included in the project, slab layout and cutting of countertop pieces will be based on Programmer Experience and Optimal Material Use

Dolomite Countertop ...Considerations & Expectations .
Dolomite Countertop ...Considerations & Expectations ()

Dolomite is similar to Marble in look and characteristics, except, it is denser and harder due to the addition of Magnesium to the Calcium Carbonate (MgCaCO3). Dolomites offer some to the whiter natural stone options with softer flowing movement and may contain hues of brown, pink, black, and green.

Dolomite often features "linear markings", soft looking line going against the stone flow or movement. It is felt that this characteristic line is an indication of compressive stress followed by re-crystallization during the rock formation. Some dolomites show many of these compression stress lines, while in others are much less frequent. Some can be easily seen while others take a much closer inspection (see photos on page for examples). These linear markings are normally solid & smooth to the touch, and are viewed as part of the stones characteristics. Micro compressive stress markings give the stone a nature made feel indicating endurance over time.

    Exquisite Dolomite Countertop Options:
Fantasy Brown, Fantastic Brown, Silver Cloud, Supreme White, Raffaello, Super White, Panda, Shadow Storm, Aurelius Black, Aurelius White, Black Raven and Calacatta Da Vinci.

Dolomite is a sedimentary rock, which is the result of limestone and lime mud into contact with groundwater rich in magnesium, giving, this stone a similarities to limestone in composition and color schemes. Dolomite may also be called dolostone.

Dolomite is not as hard and resistant as granite or quartzite nor as soft as marble, all stones that can last decades, remaining beautiful if care is taken.

This stone is very resistant to wear and tear, and although it is more prone to cracking and chipping than granite, it most likely won’t happen.

Dolomite is both less liquid absorbent and less sensitive to acids than marble. However, it still requires periodic (most likely annual) sealing. And acids are a no-no, dolomite will etch if exposed to them.

Each slab is unique, which makes for truly aesthetic appealing designs, offering a great countertop look!

    Geological Activity Features .
    Geological Activity Features ()

Some natural countertop stones, especially quartizes, dolomites and marbles may show geological activity features that look like cracks in the stone. These lines were most likely do to compression and shifts during the creation millions of years ago. One can only imagine the pressure and heat that was involved during the creation of these stones, with quartize receiving the most. These geological activity features may look similar to cracks or fractures, however they they will feel smooth and fused together.

These geological activity features give these natural stones a special look, a window back in time before humans on earth. This may be the accent look that will give your countertop the unique natureral feel you are looking for, only you can decide.

Granite Countertop ...Considerations & Expectations .
Granite Countertop ...Considerations & Expectations ()

Granite is tough, resistant to staining, etching, and won't scorch if you happen to place a hot pan on it. For the best level of protection, a sealer is applied to granite countertops during fabrication and can quickly resealed by the homeowner in minutes.

Most Granite countertops do require a seam(s) which are visible to some extent. In addition, granite countertop require firm support with well leveled cabinets. Although one can chip granite, it is unlikely, but if it occurs, chip repair and other granite countertop restoration options are available.

Granite countertops are the most preferred choice for kitchen countertops. Granite countertops are 100% natural, extremely durable, and available in hundreds of colors covering virtually every design preference. Granite slabs are unique with its own charm and appeal ranging from deep earth tones, vibrant shades of green, blue, red or yellow, tones of black, gray and white. Many see their granite countertops as a one-of-a kind priceless piece of art.

Partial payment is required to hold any slab or partial

Holding slab partials at Granite Works is not covered by any Warranty or Guarantee. With the high level of slab & partial turn-over, logistics, potential of damage and shortage of space, any slabs or partials held from a prior job or for a future job are vulnerable to damage and other potential misfortunes. Granite Works will not cover any such situation.

Alternatively, we strongly recommend that all stone color related jobs be cut and fabricated at the same time. This is the safest way to assure the use of the matching countertop color

Please keep in mind that we always have a space shortage, all warehouse space is under constant use. In addition, slabs are constantly being moved & used increasing the chance of scratches or breakage. Care is taking but no guarantee can be given.

Matching Material to Customer Expectations .
Matching Material to Customer Expectations ()

Color is very important, however matching material quality & work ability to customer expectations is also a big consideration. For example, an exotic stone with dynamic color variation may look awesome, but to get this great color variation, mother nature may have combined minerals that do not adhere well making the stone more fragile, more susceptible to scratches, or higher porosity for stain and etching. This type of stone not only requires more care in your kitchen, but also much more care in frabrication and installation

Bottom line to keep in mind: the exotic stone with dynamic color may inherent flaws, or beauty marks, depending on your perception and stone appreciation.

Natural Stone ...Fissures - Cracks - Chips - Bruises .
Natural Stone ...Fissures - Cracks - Chips - Bruises ()

Fissures occur naturally in many stone types. A fissure is defined by the American Geological Institute as an extensive crack, break, or fracture in the rock, which may contain mineral-bearing material. The term fissure is used commercially in the stone industry to describe a visible separation along inter-crystalline boundaries or the voids between mineral crystals. This separation may start and stop within the field of the stone or extend through an edge. A fissure differs from a crack in that it is a naturally occurring feature in the stone.

Cracks occur in stones as a result of mechanically induced stresses during handling, fabrication, transport, or installation. When cracks are detected in slab material prior to fabrication, the best method is to simply avoid them during the layout process. In stones with lesser soundness properties, this option may not be possible. When working with such stones it is common practice to repair cracks by cementing them together with epoxy or polyester resin. Repaired cracks are not indicative of defective product or workmanship. In fact, this practice is used sometimes used in the production of natural stone slabs, as a method of stabilizing very special exotic stone. This practice along with mesh backing greatly enhances exotic stone options.

Chips can occur in stones either as a result of sawing operations or handling. Chips may be repaired with epoxy or polyester resin if the completed repair is consistent in color and texture with unrepaired areas of the slab.

Bruises may be unexplained or caused by a sharp object hitting the surface. It is noticed as tiny spot in the surface that shows a divot. Chip filler is the normal go to with color matching. One may have success with supper glue drops followed by genital use of razor blade to removal of excess after a 24 hour cure time.

Step 1. Choose Your Countertop Stone Color!
An exciting step, however, this can be a tricky step in the process. With so many natural stone colors to choose from, one may find it hard to pick the color they love most and works with all the other kitchen colors that are already in play. Then to add a little more challenge to the task, one may be presented with multiple names for the same color. Below are a few examples that may help you navigate this step in the process.

Natural Stone ..Hardness, Staining & Marble Sub-Groups .
Natural Stone ..Hardness, Staining & Marble Sub-Groups ()

We often see our natural stone options as specific groups of stone: Marble, Granite, Quartzite. However, it may be best to see them as a spectrum of options!

    In general, the Mohs Hardness Scale is as follows: Soapstone 1 · Slate 2.5-4 · Calcite 3· Marble 3-4 · Dolomite 3.5-4 · Limestone 3-4 · Travertine 4-5 · Sandstone 6-7 · Granite 6-7 · Quartzite 7 · Diamond 10

Let's Take a Closer Look, with an Emphasis on Brazilian Stone, a major stone source.

Granite - Resistant to stain or etch, but some can scratch, specially the ones with black mineral called mica (or schist), such as Black Mist, Brazilian Black and Black Thunder. A leather or honed finish, should minimize the scratching problems. Some black granite such as Saturnia are actually all made of the mica mineral and because of that they usually scratch easier. Some others such as Titanium and Magma also have some mica, but much less than Saturnia, so it will not scratch as easy.

Quartzite - these are some of the hardest stone mother natural can produce. They are all made of natural quartz and because of that it will not scratch at all. However, some of them can absorb water and other liquids, such as the most white colors for example Bianco Superiore, Lavezzi, Mustang White and White Lux. However, once we are done polishing the slabs, we apply our sealer which should protect those materials from absorbing water. The problem is that when a fabricator cuts the stone and edges that sealer can go away at those areas where they were cut. So the fabricator will need to wait until it is fully dry and then add a sealer again before installing. That way it should avoid the water absorption problem.

Marble - classifying Brazilian Marbles into three categories:

    1. Marble - this would be similar to any known marbles worldwide. It is softer and more fragile, which makes of it good options for bathrooms, lower traffic uses, best care situations, since they can scratch and stain easier. Very few Brazilian Marbles can be classified into regular marbles. Some of the regular marbles from Brazil are: Amazon, Arctic Green, Mandala (or Avalanche), Carrara Brazil, Sequoia Brown and a very few others.

    2. Dolomite Marble
Most of Brazilian marbles are actually Dolomite Marbles. Dolomite is a mineral that makes the Brazilian marbles much more resistant to wear. It usually does not scratch or stain easily and that is why some confuse it with a quartzite. It is actually a very hard marble an maybe it should not even call it marble. The main issue you can have with these stones is etching. It can etch with acids (lemon, etc) and when it does, the polished surface will become duller. If the surfaces is honed or leather finished, one is much less likely to notice when it etches, since these finishes are somehow already etched! This is why most of the Brazilian slabs have honed, leather or even dual finished (back honed and front polished) options. Most Brazilian marbles are dolomitics. They include: Aspen White, Tesoro Bianco, Aurelius White, Fantastic Brown, London Fog, Matarazzo, Manhattan, Panda, Shadow Storm, Silver Cloud, Supreme White, Super White and many others.

    3. Dolomitic Marble with Calcite Mineral
These stones contain some natural crystals called calcite. Calcite crystals are super hard and highly etch resistant. However these crystals can be tricky to edge as it can crumble a bit when cutting during fabrication. Most fabricators are fine if they run a straight edge on it when cutting. These minerals are translucent, which makes a nice for backlit tops in kitchens, bathroom and bar tops. Some stone colors from this category are: Ice Crystal, Blue Iceberg and White Cloud.

In closing, the properties of Brazilian Dolomite Marbles may change how we view our kitchen countertop options. These materials are clean looking, very unique, with a modern appeal.

    A NATURALLY SUPERIOR PRODUCT!

Your Natural stone investment will never depreciate in value and will add value to your home. As with most investments there is cautionary information that we like to provide to you. Product education is very important to us and to you. This document is intended to disclose information on the natural product you are purchasing.

The following is an excerpt from Section 14 of "A Homeowner's Guide to Natural Stone Countertop Installation" published by The Marble Institute of America: Your stone may or may not contain one or more of the following:

Pitting of the countertop surface, particularly in granite, is a common characteristic of natural stones.  Granites are made up of several different minerals, each mineral having a different hardness. Granites contain quartz, feldspars, biotite, amphibole, ferrous titanium oxides, and other minerals. On the Mohs Scale, diamonds are the hardest mineral, with a rating of 10. Quartz and feldspar have a hardness of 6.5 to 7 and are very durable. Biotite (mica) is very soft (2.5) and flakes easily. All true granites have biotite in their composition. Because biotite is soft and flaky, the first few layers are removed during the polishing process, causing pits throughout the slab. Some granites have more biotite throughout their composition than others. The higher the biotite content of the stone, the more pits it will have. Most polished igneous rocks will have varying degrees of pits, depending on the amount of biotite, muscovite, and phlogopite in their composition. The pits do not make the granite less durable or otherwise inferior. Pits are common in all granites and should be expected.

Maintenance of natural stone can sound overwhelming. It really is a simple process and there are options on how you can maintain your natural stone. With proper maintenance, the process of replacing your kitchen countertops will never have to be done again. This investment will outlast generations. One option would be to seal it annually. This is a very simple wipe on wipe off process. We have Restoration Packages available if you would rather leave it to the professional. Another Option would be to use a Stone Tech Care Kit. This product is a cleaner with a built in sealer. This product would be the only product you would use on your stone and on a daily basis. It seals while you clean.

Natural Stone ..Know Your Stone .
Natural Stone ..Know Your Stone ()

    Stone Identification
    Know Your Stone
Natural stone can be classified into two general categories according to its composition: siliceous stone or calcareous stone. Knowing the difference is critical when selecting cleaning products.

Siliceous stone is composed mainly of silica or quartz-like particles. It tends to be very durable and relatively easy to clean with mild acidic cleaning solutions. Types of siliceous stone include granite, slate, sandstone, quartzite, brownstone and bluestone.

Calcareous stone is composed mainly of calcium carbonate. It is sensitive to acidic cleaning products and frequently requires different cleaning procedures than siliceous stone. Types of calcareous stone include marble, travertine, limestone and onyx. What may work on siliceous stone may not be suitable on calcareous surfaces.

    Stone Finishes

A polished finish on the stone has a glossy surface that reflects light and emphasizes the color and marking of the material. This type of finish is used on walls, furniture tops and other items, as well as floor tiles.

A honed finish is a satin smooth surface with relatively little light reflection. Generally, a honed finish is preferred for floors, stair treads, thresholds and other locations where heavy traffic will wear off the polished finish. A honed finish may also be used on furniture tops and other surfaces.

A flamed finish is a rough textured surface used frequently on granite floor tiles.

    Stone Colors and Appearance

Granites and marbles are quarried throughout the world in a variety of colors with varying mineral compositions. In most cases, marbles and granites can be identified by visible particles at the surface of the stone. Marble will normally show "veins" or high concentrations. The minerals in granite will typically appear as small flecks distributed uniformly in the stone. Each type of stone is unique and will vary in color, texture and marking.

Sandstones vary widely in color due to different minerals and clays found in the stone. Sandstone is light gray to yellow or red. A dark reddish brown sandstone, also called brownstone, has commonly been used in the northeastern United States and eastern Canada. Bluestone is a dense, hard, fine-grained sandstone of greenish-gray or bluish-gray color and is quarried in the eastern United States.

Limestone is a widely used building stone with colors typically light gray, tan or buff. A distinguishing characteristic of many limestones is the presence of fossils that are frequently visible in the stone surface. Slate is dark green, black, gray, dark red or multi-colored. It is most commonly used as a flooring material and for roof tiles and is often distinguished by its distinct cleft texture.

    Care and Precautions
Use coasters under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices. Many common foods and drinks contain acids that will etch or dull the surface of many stones. Do not place hot items directly on the stone surface. Use trivets or mats under hot dishes and place mats under china, ceramics, silver or other objects that can scratch the surface.

    Cleaning Procedures and Recommendations
    Floor Surfaces
 - Dust mop interior floors frequently using a clean non-treated dry dust mop. Sand, dirt and grit do the most damage to natural stone surfaces due to their abrasiveness. Mats or area rugs inside and outside an entrance will help to minimize the sand, dirt and grit that will scratch the stone floor. Be sure that the underside of the mat or rug is a non-slip surface. Normally, it will take a person about eight steps on a floor surface to remove sand or dirt from the bottom of their shoes. Do not use vacuum cleaners that are worn. The metal or plastic attachments or the wheels may scratch the surface.

    Other Surfaces

Clean stone surfaces with a few drops of neutral cleaner, stone soap (available at hardware stores or from your stone dealer) or a mild liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water. Use a clean rag mop on floors and a soft cloth for other surfaces for best results. Too much cleaner or soap may leave a film and cause streaks. Do not use products that contain lemon, vinegar or other acids on marble or limestone. Rinse the surface thoroughly after washing with the soap solution and dry with a soft cloth. Change the rinse water frequently. Do not use scouring powders or creams; these products contain abrasives that may scratch the surface.

    Bath and Other Wet Areas

In the bath or other wet areas, soap scum can be minimized by using a squeegee after each use. To remove soap scum, use a non-acidic soap scum remover or a solution of ammonia and water (about 1/2 cup ammonia to a gallon of water). Frequent or over-use of an ammonia solution may eventually dull the surface of the stone.

    Vanity Top Surfaces

Vanity tops may need to have a penetrating sealer applied. Check with your installer for recommendations. A good quality marble wax or non-yellowing automobile paste wax can be applied to minimize water spotting.

    Sealing Countertop
Test high use areas: 1. place some water on the counter, let it sit for 10-15 minutes. 2. Wipe away water with a dry cloth & look for any darkening of the stone. 3. If darkening occurs, allow to dry & then seal following manufacture instuctions.

    Food Preparation Areas

In food preparation areas, the stone may need to have a penetrating sealer applied. Check with your installer for recommendations. If a sealer is applied, be sure that it is non-toxic and safe for use on food preparation surfaces. If there are questions, check with the sealer manufacturer. Outdoor Pool & Patio Areas
In outdoor pool, patio or hot tub areas, flush with clear water and use a mild bleach solution to remove algae or moss.

    Stains
    Spills and Stains
Blot the spill with a paper towel immediately. Don't wipe the area, it will spread the spill. Flush the area with plain water and mild soap and rinse several times. Dry the area thoroughly with a soft cloth. Repeat as necessary. If the stain remains, refer to the section in this brochure on stain removal. Stain Removal
Identifying the type of stain on the stone surface is the key to removing it. If you don't know what caused the stain, play detective. Where is the stain located? Is it near a plant, a food service area, an area where cosmetics are used? What color is it? What is the shape or pattern? What goes on in the area around the stain? Surface stains can often be removed by cleaning with an appropriate cleaning product or household chemical. Deep-seated or stubborn stains may require using a poultice or calling in a professional. The following sections describe the types of stains that you may have to deal with and appropriate household chemicals to use and how to prepare and apply a poultice to remove the stain.

Types of Stains and First Step Cleaning Actions

    OIL-BASED
(grease, tar, cooking oil, milk, cosmetics)

An oil-based stain will darken the stone and normally must be chemically dissolved so the source of the stain can be flushed or rinsed away. Clean gently with a soft, liquid cleanser with bleach OR household detergent OR ammonia OR mineral spirits OR acetone.

    ORGANIC
(coffee, tea, fruit, tobacco, paper, food, urine, leaves, bark, bird droppings)

May cause a pinkish-brown stain and may disappear after the source of the stain has been removed. Outdoors, with the sources removed, normal sun and rain action will generally bleach out the stains. Indoors, clean with12% hydrogen peroxide (hair bleaching strength) and a few drops of ammonia.

    METAL
(iron, rust, copper, bronze)

Iron or rust stains are orange to brown in color and follow the shape of the staining object such as nails, bolts, screws, cans, flower pots, metal furniture. Copper and bronze stains appear as green or muddy-brown and result from the action of moisture on nearby or embedded bronze, copper or brass items. Metal stains must be removed with a poultice.(See section on Making & Using a Poultice) Deep-seated, rusty stains are extremely difficult to remove and the stone may be permanently stained.

    BIOLOGICAL
(algae, mildew, lichens, moss, fungi)
Clean with diluted (1/2 cup in a gallon of water) ammonia OR bleach OR hydrogen peroxide. DO NOT MIX BLEACH AND AMMONIA! THIS COMBINATION CREATES A TOXIC AND LETHAL GAS!

    INK
(magic marker, pen, ink)

Clean with bleach or hydrogen peroxide (light colored stone only!) or lacquer thinner or acetone (dark stones only!)

    PAINT

Small amounts can be removed with lacquer thinner or scraped off carefully with a razor-blade. Heavy paint coverage should be removed only with a commercial "heavy liquid" paint stripper available from hardware stores and paint centers. These strippers normally contain caustic soda or lye. Do not use acids or flame tools to strip paint from stone. Paint strippers can etch the surface of the stone; re-polishing may be necessary. Follow the manufacturer's directions for use of these products, taking care to flush the area thoroughly with clean water. Protect yourself with rubber gloves and eye protection, and work in a well-ventilated area. Use only wood or plastic scrapers for removing the sludge and curdled paint. Normally, latex and acrylic paints will not cause staining. Oil-based paints, linseed oil, putty, caulks and sealants may cause oily stains. Refer to the section on oil-based stains.

WATER SPOTS AND RINGS (surface accumulation of hard water)

Buff with dry 0000 steel wool.

    FIRE AND SMOKE DAMAGE

Older stones and smoke or fire stained fireplaces may require a thorough cleaning to restore their original appearance. Commercially available "smoke removers" may save time and effort.

    ETCH MARKS

Etch marks are caused by acids left on the surface of the stone. Some materials will etch the finish but not leave a stain. Others will both etch and stain. Once the stain has been removed, wet the surface with clear water and sprinkle on marble polishing powder, available from a hardware or lapidary store, or your local stone dealer. Rub the powder onto the stone with a damp cloth or by using a buffing pad with a low-speed power drill. Continue buffing until the etch mark disappears and the marble surface shines. Contact your stone dealer or call a professional stone restorer for refinishing or re-polishing etched areas that you cannot remove.

    EFFLORESCENCE

Efflorescence is a white powder that may appear on the surface of the stone. It is caused by water carrying mineral salts from below the surface of the stone rising through the stone and evaporating. When the water evaporates, it leaves the powdery substance. If the installation is new, dust mop or vacuum the powder. You may have to do this several times as the stone dries out. Do not use water to remove the powder; it will only temporarily disappear. If the problem persists, contact your installer to help identify and remove the cause of the moisture.

    SCRATCHES AND NICKS
S
Light surface scratches may be buffed with dry 0000 steel wool. Deeper scratches and nicks in the surface of the stone should be repaired and re-polished by a professional.

    POULTICES
    Making and Using a Poultice

A poultice is a liquid cleaner or chemical mixed with a white absorbent material to form a paste about the consistency of peanut butter. The poultice is spread over the stained area to a thickness of about 1/4 to 1/2 inch with a wood or plastic spatula, covered with plastic and left to work for 24 to 48 hours. The liquid cleaner or chemical will draw out the stain into the absorbent material. Poultice procedures may have to be repeated to thoroughly remove a stain, but some stains may never be completely removed.

    Poultice Materials

Poultice materials include kaolin, fuller's earth, whiting, diatomaceous earth, powdered chalk, white molding plaster or talc. Approximately one pound of prepared poultice material will cover one square foot. Do not use whiting or iron-type clays such as fuller's earth with acid chemicals. The reaction will cancel the effect of the poultice. A poultice can also be prepared using white cotton balls, whitepaper towels or gauze pads.

    Cleaning Agents or Chemicals
    OIL-BASED STAINS
Poultice with baking soda and water OR one of the powdered poultice materials and mineral spirits.

    ORGANIC STAINS

Poultice with one of the powdered poultice materials and 12% hydrogen peroxide solution (hair bleaching strength) OR use acetone instead of the hydrogen peroxide.

    IRON STAINS

Poultice with diatomaceous earth and a commercially available rust remover. Rust stains are particularly difficult to remove. You may need to call a professional.

    COPPER STAINS

Poultice with one of the powdered poultice materials and ammonia. These stains are difficult to remove. You may need to call a professional.

    BIOLOGICAL STAINS

Poultice with dilute ammonia OR bleach OR hydrogen peroxide. DO NOT MIX AMMO-NIA AND BLEACH! THIS COMBINATION CREATES A TOXIC AND LETHAL GAS!

    Applying the Poultice
Prepare the poultice. If using powder, mix the cleaning agent or chemical to a thick paste the consistency of peanut butter. If using paper, soak in the chemical and let drain. Don't let the liquid drip.

Wet the stained area with distilled water.
Apply the poultice to the stained area about1/4 to 1/2 inch thick and extend the poultice beyond the stained area by about one inch. Use a wood or plastic scraper to spread the poultice evenly. Cover the poultice with plastic and tape the edges to seal it. Allow the poultice to dry thoroughly, usually about 24 to 48 hours. The drying process is what pulls the stain out of the stone and into the poultice material. After about 24 hours, remove the plastic and allow the poultice to dry.

Remove the poultice from the stain. Rinse with distilled water and buff dry with a soft cloth. Use the wood or plastic scraper if necessary.

Repeat the poultice application if the stain is not removed. It may take up to five applications for difficult stains.

If the surface is etched by the chemical, apply polishing powder and buff with burlap or felt buffing pad to restore the surface.

Natural Stone ..Surface Finish Options .
Natural Stone ..Surface Finish Options ()

One will find a few natural stone surface finish options. Each finish gives the stone a different feel, which is often a matter of preference. Stone finish affects the stones surface absorption coefficient. A polished surface will be less absorbent than a honed or flamed finish. Testing with a bead of water is helpful to determine when resealing is needed

During slab production, a high-quality Italian transparent resin is used to fill any small fissures or pinholes that are common in natural stone. This is true with all popular finishes (Polished, Leathered, and Honed). Some specific varieties of stone call for other products as well.

Polished is the most commonly sought after finish. This glass like smooth finish gives the stone colors a bright look. Glare and reflection is often noticed varying with angle of the light & stone color. Black stones tend to give a mirror effect. Bright sun reflection can be a concern in some situations.

Honed (Matte) is a smooth finish but not polished as high of the of a level

Leathered (Brushed/Satin) has pronounced texture, decreasing glare, giving surface a natural feel. The texture level varies depending on the density differences within the surface.

    OUR PROCESS . Black
    OUR PROCESS ()
    Black

Congratulations! You are considering making an investment in your home and your future and we are excited to be a part of it.

We want this process to be fun and enjoyable, but also smooth, professional and most of all, we want to ensure your upmost satisfaction.

Please take a moment to get familiar with our processes. This is a friendly informational guide to the countertop installation process.

    Getting an Estimate
Narrow down your options to at least three colors. With so many beautiful options this step can sometimes be overwhelming. No worries. Our friendly sales team is here to help with that. We welcome you to our showroom to view our inventory. Bringing a sample of your cabinet, tile or other items that may affect your decision can help this process along. LIGHTING IS A KEY PLAYER!

    * Edge Style - Options are available to view in a completed countertop within our showroom.
    * Sink - We have several sink options on display in our showroom
    * Sketch of your project - It can be a rough sketch of your countertop with dimensions.
    * Backsplash - we have several options to view in our showroom

Selecting the Stone or Quarts Slab

Make an appointment to view slabs. Bring key items that may affect your decision. (Cabinet door, paint swatch, floor sample, tile, etc.). Actual slabs are tagged & put on hold for your project after payment is made prior to templating.

    Scheduling for Template and Installation
Before we can schedule anything, we need to know the scoop! Every detail of your job matters to us. Everything matters!!! Your edge profile selection could dictate how your backsplash gets fabricated for just an example. All installations are scheduled after your template visit and material coices are in stock. We do offer expedited delivery as an upgraded option.

We need you there!! Please be on site at both the template and installation visits.

Cabinets receiving countertops must be permanently installed, set and level before a successful template can be created. Digital templates are always more successful if we are able to template bare cabinetry. If this is not possible, please be sure to remove all items off of the countertop before the template visit.

If your sink was purchased outside of Granite Works, we must have access to the physical sink at the time of the template visit. It is very helpful if the sink is in the same room we are templating.

    * Apron front/farm sinks must be installed prior to the template, unless the manufacturer requires otherwise.
    * Any items requiring a cut out and a hole drilled must be on site at time of template, such as cook tops, down draft units, faucets, soap dispensers.
    * Final determination of the seam placement is done by our fabrication team. Do you want get involved? Great!!! Take advantage of our Digital Layout option!
    * Appliances that will be next to a countertop should be on site, but not necessarily installed. At template, it easier to get a more precise measurement when an appliance is NOT installed. However, we would like it on site. At installation, not having the appliance installed minimizes the risk of damage to the appliance. See your sales representative with any further questions regarding having your appliance on site.
    * Please secure any pets. We would feel terrible if they got loose. Pets can also be a tripping hazard and safety is top priority.

    Fabrication

    * Signed template dimensions will be placed on your slab by our fabrication team, who will determine best placement. Some granite has variations and movement. Get involved!! These granites may require you to attend a layout session at the fabrication shop or email confirmation. Appointments should take place the day after the template visit.

    Installing

    * All faucets & other accessories requiring a hole to be drilled will be done during your installation visit.
    * Our installation crew will install your undermount sink and/or test fit your drop in sink. Faucets & other accessories and the re-connection of your plumbing must be completed by your contractor or plumber.
    * We do not caulk the top of your backsplash. We recommend using paintable caulk.

    Finishing the countertop area

    * Faucets, cook tops, etc. must be installed by your contractor. Granite Works is not licensed to perform such work. We highly recommend you hire a plumber or an electrician.

    ENJOY and Maintain your countertop

  • Granite Works offers a Care Kit. Using this product on a daily basis will eliminate any annual sealing.
  • If you feel that the Care Kit is not right for you, you should reseal annually while using a cleaning that is geared for stone. Sealer creates a temporary barrier between a spill and your stone. Wipe up any spills as soon as possible and remember to wipe dry.
  • Stay away from any cleaning products that contain vinegar, ammonia, bleach and any citric acids such as lemons or oranges.
  • Placing hot pots or pans is acceptable with most stones. Use a trivet on stones that we do not recommend placing hot pots or pans on.
  • Cutting on your countertop is acceptable with most stones. But don't use your favorite knife (granite can dull your knife). Protect your surface with coasters, trivets and placemats when necessary.
  • We also offer hassle free Restoration Packages. Ask your Sales Associate for information.
  • We look forward to your project!

Please take a moment to review the following Documents. Feel free to print them. These documents are simple and easy and are required to be signed prior to scheduling. Call us with any questions. We are here to assist.

Porcelain Countertop ...Why or Why Not .
Porcelain Countertop ...Why or Why Not ()

When considering kitchen countertop, water resistant, high heat resistance, and very hard are often stated properties of Porcelain. Porcelain is a great product in some situations, however, is it the product you are looking for in a kitchen countertop?

As a fabricator and installer, we would like to point out several other considerations.

    1. Porcelain slabs are smaller and harder to safely transport leading to more waste and more seams

    2. Porcelain countertops are very-very difficult to fabricate. Porcelain slabs are very thin (0.25 to 0.5") compared to natural stone or quartz (normally 1.25" thick). Porcelain is very rigid. This makes Porcelain very pron to breakage during cutting and moving of material and finished countertops.

    3. Limited Edges Options. Square build-up and mitered or the only two options we can presently offer. Mitered is limited to straight lines. Build-up and Mitered greatly increase the precision cutting needs, increasing fabrication time, often include breakage of the thin strips and will most likely show the glue line. With the breakage, any movement in the stone becomes extremely difficult to account for.

    4. Challenges of undermounted sinks with porcelain should be considered. Mounting methods typically uses for granite, marble, quartzite or quartz are more difficult due to the need to edge support.

    5. Porcelain is not new, one may remember or find old porcelain sinks in that are very stained and chipped. Although the sink area may be more prone to stains and chips, it does make one wonder.

    6. Porcelain Sealer Porcelain is "nonporous", making it resistant to staining. However, no surface is 100% stain proof. Porcelain may be sealed with nanotechnology porcelain sealer with particles small enough to get into the microscopic imperfections in the surface.

    7. Porcelain cookware, plates and diamond jewelry that drag on the countertop can scratch the countertop. A special a scratch repair system is required for porcelain.

    8. Porcelain countertop overhangs require much more support. Being a thinner and very ridged material, it is very important to insure adequate support for any overhang area.

    9. Porcelain countertop require buildup, similar to that of acrylic which is the same thickness.

    10. Moderate life span compared to natural stone. Cracks, breakages and scratches lead to shortened life span. Being an extremely rigid thin material, great care must be taken to avoid flex or hits with other hard objects.

Please review other sites, and other countertop options before you decide on your next countertop.

With all the pros for quartz countertops, it is also important to understand the cons. Knowing both will help one decide and care for a quartz countertops if chosen.

Myth 1. Quartz countertops will not stain because it is not porous.
..Being made of quartz & Resins, white quartz countertops are most vulnerable to stains from food. All quartz colors can be damaged by chemicals or cleaners.

Myth 2. Quartz countertops withstand high heat. The resins in quartz countertops is effected by high heat and/or prolonged heat. Resins (the glue) are organic (carbon based), making quartz countertops a non porous surface, however they can be damaged.

    Myth 3. White is white!
"Light is perceived by the human visual system as white when the incoming light to the eye stimulates ALL three types of color (Red/Green/Blue) sensitive cone cells in the eye in roughly equal amounts. Materials that do not emit light themselves appear white" (wikipedia.org).
The color white show can show slight changes in composition, hue, shade, reflection in surface properties. Being man-made does not exclude lot variations, slab to slab variations, nor white variations within a slab. A seam between different parts of the same material can real slightly perceived differences. Lighting type and intensity may also effect these perceived variations in the white color.

    Bottom Line:
Quartz has many great qualities and it is one of the best options for a bright white design look. It is however important to understand the material to better understand countertop expectations and best care for longevity.

Quartz Countertop ..Expectations & Acceptance Waiver .
Quartz Countertop ..Expectations & Acceptance Waiver ()

Your quartz countertop is a big investment to your home. As with most investments there is cautionary information to provide. Product education is very important to us and to you. This document is intended to disclose information on the quarts countertop product you are purchasing.

SEAMS: Hard surface countertops exhibit visible seams. Every effort is made to limit the number of seams. Seam location is designed to be aesthetically pleasing and economically sensitive. Expect large degrees of color variation or pattern at the seam. Final seam placement will be determined during production. Most slabs will not be perfectly flat although all possible measures are taken to ensure tight and smooth seams. Slight variations are to be expected including ledges with the tolerance of the thickness of a business card.

VEINING: Quartz with veining creates a unique challenge at seams, especially with L shapes. At times, the job may fit on one slab which is ideal for color match at the seam, however, this is not optimal for vein flow at the seam. Which one has priority? Will an available partial or even a second slab be a shade off the first? To compound the challenge, the slabs are protected with plastic until after cutting, making it very hard to detect even a very slight color mismatch. A balance between color match, best use, and vein flow may not always occur.

COLOR: It is estimate that humans can distinguish 1 to 100 million color variations. Quartz is often chosen for the whiteness. As you may have experienced with paints, even the slightest difference in mixture composition, hue, shade, reflection lighting or surface properties, can cause a whiteness difference. Being man-made does not exclude variations, slab to slab manufacturer variations within a batch, batch to batch and whiteness variations within a slab can occur. A seam between different parts of the same material does yield color differences, perceived or not perceived. Lighting type, lighting angle, light intensity, variation of color in the viewing field effect the eyes ability to perceive variations in the whiteness color differences. In other words, light color countertops with fewer patterns create more contrast between the stone and the seam, which makes the seam more visible and any color variations more visible. Great effort is made to avoid visible color variations, however it is not a guarantee against one occurring.

STAINING: Quartz countertops are very stain resistant, but NOT stain proof. The quartz resins are vulnerable to stains. All quartz colors can be damaged by chemicals or cleaners. Avoid bleach and disinfectant wipes containing bleach. Keeping the contact time short, by wiping down the countertop, decreases the chance of damage.

HEAT: Quartz surfaces are extremely hard, but heat is of concern. The resins in quartz countertops can only tolerate temperatures of about 150 degrees Celsius (302 degrees Fahrenheit). Higher temperatures can cause discoloring damage. Not recommended for fireplace areas, due to cracking potential. Please always use trivets.

UV: Quartz countertops utilize resins and epoxy to bind them together. Resins are susceptible to ultraviolet rays in sunlight and over time can degrade. Quartz is strongly not recommended in exterior application areas.

CHIPS: As with other hard rigid countertops, corners and edges of quartz countertops can chip or break. You can, however, decrease the risk of damage by taking extra care with other hard objects.

CRACKS: Cracks are unlikely but could occur with mechanically induced stresses, such as movement in cabinets. A solid level and stable base is required.

CARE: Proper countertop care is important. Wipe them down using a soft cloth or sponge and a warm water soap mix as needed. Give your quartz countertop the love it deserves!

Quartzite Countertops ...Care & Information .
Quartzite Countertops ...Care & Information ()

Quartzite is a granular metamorphic rock consisting of interlocking grains of quartz (silica dioxide - SiO2). Sand grains subjected to high heat & high pressure, with various mineral present yielding exquisite coloring.

Formed from sand-stone-based rock to glassy crystalline with heat and pressure. The very hard crystalline structure creates a more brittle stone that is stabilized by resins.

This very hard dense material tends to be smooth with a grainy and lustrous softer appearance and can have a wide range of coloring!

Quartzite does require sealing. Quartzite is susceptible to etching and staining.

Resins are natural or synthetic compounds generally originating from tree or plant sap. Unsellable stone slabs that were rejected in the past at the quarry because of brittleness, can now be turned into marketable slabs with resins. This is one reason why quartzite has recently become popular.

It is advised to test & seal your quartzite countertops at least annually.

It is typical for quartzite slabs to contain natural fissures which can widen during fabrication and installation. The fissures are noticeable to the eye and to the touch. Some fissures may have been filled prior to getting to the distributor/fabricator, and some can be filled by the fabricator during the fabrication and installation processes. It may even be possible for new fissures to occur after the countertops are in place. The characteristic is inherent in the nature of the product and is not to be considered a latent defect. Any repair work needed on the material selected by the homeowner/builder will be available at an additional charge.

Quartzite countertops are a stunning natural stone material that will bring your design to the next level. Its authenticity will create a one-of-a-kind look, as no two slabs are the same. Mother nature’s unique artwork is displayed in these untouched pieces.

    1. CLEAN UP SPILLS IMMEDIATELY
Especially oily and acidic foods like tomato sauce, wine, coffee, fruit juice, and soda.

    2. USE NATURAL STONE CLEANERS
Products specifically made for cleaning natural stone are recommended. If stone cleaners are not available, use a damp sponge with warm water and mild soap.

    3. USE HOT PADS OR TRIVETS
Do not place hot pots and pans directly on your countertop. Use hot pads, coasters or place-mats for food and drinks.

    4. USE A CUTTING BOARD
Using a knife directly on your countertops can possibly affect the coverage of the sealer and damage the knife.

    5. RESEAL YOUR QUARTZITE COUNTERTOPS
Because quartzite is a naturally porous stone, it is recommended to reseal your tops to help prevent staining.

It’s important to care for your quartzite countertops to ensure everlasting beauty. Use these tips on a daily basis to keep your natural stone surfaces in tip-top shape.

    Countertop Seam Education

Product education is very important to having a successful project. One big topic is seams. It is important to have realistic expectations of seams in natural stone or a quartz countertop. Ideally a seam in the countertop should not be the first thing you notice when you walk into the room, however, this does depend on your focus. A great seam will be something you can still both see and feel, but may not be strikingly noticeable. It is best to look at samples of seams in both a natural stone countertop as well as quartz. It is very important to keep several points in mind.

    Color & Movement
Some stone colors are much better at hiding seams then others. A stone with movement add another layer of challenge. It is important to keep this in mind as you select your countertop color.

    Joint (Seam) Widths:
Joint width varies slightly depending on the material composition. Some materials hold a sharper cut and seam tighter. The joint width does not include the dimension of an arris on the stone edge. When an arris is used, the perceived joint width may be greater than the actual width due to the seam filler occupying the width of the arris. An arris (small chamfer on the edge - approximately 1/16" x 1/16") can be used to eliminate chips resulting from the diamond cutting of the stone.

    Lippage:
The term lippage, as used in the stone industry, is the planar offset of the finished surfaces of two adjacent stone units. Due to the relatively tight seams used in countertop installations, even minor amounts of lippage are noticeable. Lippage may be unavoidable due to permanent warp in the slab stock. There should be no detectable lippage at the front edge of the countertop.

    Exposed Edges:
Exposed Edges of adjacent stone slabs must be matched in thickness and properly installed so that neither the top nor bottom surface edge exceeds lippage tolerances.

    Veining:
When using materials with obvious movement, all materials shall be installed with vein running in the same direction unless otherwise specified. For materials with very active movement, it should be expected that the result of your seam may contain a vein that flows into the seam and then stops. If your material selection has high movement and active veining it is suggested that you consider purchasing the Digital Layout Countertop Investment option. With this service, we involve you digitally via email to assist in visualizing how your countertops will be cut. This allows you to discuss countertop visual pattern flow goals.

Industry standards from the Marble Institute of America can be found in the Homeowners Guide to Countertop Installation.

    Safety & Seam Requirements
Seam location and frequency is influenced by the available stock of the selected material, home access, worker safety & optimizing for install success. Seam location is also placed with consideration of the least vulnerable area for breakage. There tends to be some controversy as to whether seams should be placed in the center of a sink or in the center of a cook top cut out. Granite Works, LLC, is open to discussion on seam placement and we will give our best recommendation for seam placement.

During installation, typically, our first attempt to fit the seam together is not perfect. It may take a few attempts to dry fit and remove the tops from the home to adjust as needed. This process could require multiple attempts to achieve an acceptable fit. No need to worry, this is a normal procedure.

We thank you for taking the time to read this document and allowing us to educate you on Countertop Seams. We are excited for you to enjoy your new countertop!

    Seams & Sink Run .
    Seams & Sink Run ()

One often sees a long sink in a countertop layout. In most cases, it is an attempt to avoid seams. Before deciding if a long sink run is the best approach, let us look at a few variables.

    1. Does the longer sink run yield less seams? Often it does not, because most kitchen layouts incorporate an L shape or a U shape requiring seams near the corner.

    2. Is it wise to have the longest countertop, the one with a large sink hole. One often chooses the largest sink that will fit and with the trend to square corners, breakage during fabrication and installation becomes a bigger concern. The combination of a long sink run and sink cutout does result in fractured countertops and remake.

    3. Long sinks runs are more difficult to maneuver during fabrication and into the home, also increasing the chances of damage and safety.

To re-cap, the sink run is most often the most challenging countertop piece, when taking a look at seam placement, please take into account the above points when choosing seam placement. In some cases, one in-significant move of a seam can great shorten the sink run, and as a result decrease the chances of the above issue occurring. This will in-turn decrease material waste and environmental waste.

    Preparation:
    1. View countertop options and read resources at nygraniteworks.com
    2. Email a layout with measurements to quotes@nygraniteworks.com, with stone preferences, contact info & job site address
    3. Review Quote & Schedule a warehouse visit

    Warehouse:
    1. Based on quote of different stone groups, budget, viewing website stone inventory color options, a showroom visit is the next step. In most cases, only part of the stone is visible in the warehouse. In additions, the warehouse lighting is much less compared to a kitchen were the countertop is horizontal. However, it is still nice to see & touch the stone.
    2. After narrowing doing the selection to 2-3 stone inventory colors, it may be an option to pull a couple slabs for better viewing, depending on available staffing. A pre scheduled is best.

Silestone Quartz is a cleaner, safer surface. With the unique combination of built-in antimicrobial product protection, National Sanitation Foundation Certification and GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certification, Silestone Quartz is easier to clean and keep cleaner. Silestone is safe for areas where food preparation could take place and protects the quality of your indoor environment.

Silestone Quartz Daily Cleaning Routine For Silestone Quartz with a polished finish, we recommend you use a mild household cleaner, such as 409, Fantastik, Lysol, or Windex. In case of stubborn spills or stains, soak the area for up to 10 minutes with one of the above cleaners and vigorously wipe away with a non scratch Scotch Brite pad.

Silestone LeatherTM does show daily living more frequently and therefore requires more daily maintenance than other Silestone Quartz products. For your daily cleaning routine we recommend Countertop MagicTM follow instructions on bottle of cleaner.

Silestone Quartz Common Use The natural quartz in Silestone makes it the toughest interior surface available on the market. It resists scratching, staining and scorching better than any other natural stone or solid surface. Do avoid excessive force or pressure because that may mar or chip the surface. Don't worry about spills from coffee, wine, lemon juice, olive oil, vinegar, makeup, and many other common household products; just avoid harsh chemicals. And don't worry about dropping a lit match onto your Silestone countertop; it won't scorch. But, use trivets when placing any hot items to avoid thermal shock.

CAUTION The following will harm Silestone Quartz: Drano, Liquid Plumr, oven cleaners and floor strippers. Do NOT use these or any other harsh chemicals on your Silestone surface.

CAUTION Do NOT use crock pots or electric skillets while in direct contact with your Silestone surfaces. Always place them on a trivet or cutting board to protect your countertop. (Review your electric appliance manual as a reference.) Silestone is a stone product. As with any natural stone, certain exposure to heat may cause cracks due to thermal shock.
